Professional Experience

Professor Mustaque Hossain received his doctoral degree from Arizona State University (ASU) in 1990. After graduation, he briefly worked for the Arizona Department of Transportation. He has been teaching at K-State since 1991. Over the last 30 years, Hossain has taught 14 different undergraduate and graduate classes at ASU and K-State. In 2021, he received the ASCE Region 7 (Kansas, Colorado, Whyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and the St. Louis and Kansas City areas of Missouri) Lifetime Achievement Award.  In 2018, he won the Alford-Myers Teaching Excellence Award of the College of Engineering. In 2017, he won the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award. In 2005 and 2007, he won the Chi Epsilon Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award. In 2006, 2008 and 2009, he won the Chi Epsilon Undergraduate Advising Excellence Award. In 2007, he won the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter Undergraduate Advising Excellence Award. In 2011 and 2012, he was named the Outstanding Faculty Member by the ASCE Student Chapter. From 2008-2010 and 2014-2016, he served as an adjunct professor for the Universiti Teknologi- MARA in Malaysia. From 2006-2015, he served as the associate director of the Mid-America Transportation Center and the FHWA Region 7 University Transportation Center. In 2003, Hossain was named a Fulbright Scholar and was attached to the Universiti Putra Malaysia. From 2005 to 2008, he served as the graduate program director for the department of civil engineering at K-State. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Kansas.

Research

Hossain’s research is in the area of highway materials and pavement engineering. He has been the principal or co-principal investigator for 74 sponsored research projects totaling more than $6.9 million. Sponsors of his research include the U.S. Department of Transportation; Kansas Department of Transportation; Kansas Turnpike Authority; Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and New York State Departments of Transportation; Federal Highway Administration; National Research Council; and private industry. Hossain in the recent past was chair of the Highway Construction Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He serves on various technical committees of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies. In 2016, he was named recipient of the Frank G. Erskine Award of the Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute, and in 2015 he won the K-State College of Engineering Dean’s Research Excellence Award. In 2006 and 2008, he won the Outstanding Researcher Award in the civil engineering department.

Academic Highlights

Hossain has authored or co-authored two book chapters, and more than 168 technical publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He has made numerous presentations at various national and international forums, and authored or coauthored 52 published technical reports. He holds three U.S. patents. As a major professor, he has supervised 36 master’s theses and 12 doctoral dissertations. Hossain was named the Dwight D. Eisenhower Faculty Fellow by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1995, 2000 and 2003. He was the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member of the K-State Civil Engineering Department in 2002. In 2003, he was inducted as an Honor Faculty Member into Chi Epsilon, and in 2010 was elevated to Chapter Honor Member.

Outreach

Since 1996 Hossain has been supervising the joint KSU-Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT)-Industry program for Superpave Certification Training that certified 1,900 engineers and technicians to date and generated close to $900,000 in revenue.
